What is LezVolley?
LezVolley is an annual women’s volleyball tournament on Cherry Grove, Fire Island beaches. The event is extremely popular in the LGBTQ community and brings together the hottest women from the tri-state area for a day of play.
Started by Danielle Stanziale and Kristine Bungay in June 2011 with 12 teams braving Hurricane conditions to compete, it quickly proved to be a day that everyone can enjoy from being a competitor to cheering on your favorite team or a favorite player.
Every year, the LezVolley event attracts more and more players, and the audience grows with visitors coming to watch the game and enjoy a beach day filled with entertainment. The tournament pumped up to 18 teams over the past 7 years and the crowd now reaches over 500 people.
LezVolley has teamed up with New York City’s Gotham Volleyball league, the largest gay sports organization in New York City founded in 1981, who professionally officiate all the tournaments.
Who’s coming to LezVolley?
The majority of LezVolley’s players and attendees belong to the LGBTQ community.
The tournament gathers a wide range of teams from the 5 Boroughs of New York, Long Island, and New Jersey. The players are from all ages, from 20’s to 50’s, and all have different levels – from beginners to advanced – with most of them being intermediate.
All players and visitors can stay for the day, rent a hotel room for the weekend, or rent a weekly vacation.
The monthly and summer rentals are also always booked with regulars of Fire Island, and the island is packed for the LezVolley weekend.
LezVolley after party
LezVolley has an official after party at Cherry’s Bar and Grill, the most popular bar on Cherry Grove. The party starts right after the game and goes on all night long with amazing DJ’s, a full bar, and a food menu.
