How to get to Fire Island

The LezVolley tournament takes place every year on Fire Island, on the beaches of Cherry Grove. If you have been to Fire Island before, you know that the landscape is breathtaking, and the atmosphere is fun and relaxing.

Although it is completely worth the trip, getting to Fire Island can be tricky if you don’t know the directions.

Below, you will find directions (and maps) that will help you get there, whether you are driving to Fire Island, or taking public transportation.

 

How to get to Fire Island driving?

If you are driving to Cherry Grove, Fire Island, the best way to get there is to use your GPS to get to the Sayville Ferry (41 River Road, Sayville NY 11782) and take the Long Island Expressway (I-495).

Once arrived, you will be able to park at the River Road Parking (50 River Rd, Sayville, NY 11782) and walk to the Ferry located less than 400ft away.

Tips:

  • It takes about 2 hours to drive to the Sayville Ferry from Manhattan.
  • The parking cost options are by hour, daily, and weekend.
  • In Summer, the Ferry runs about every hour. You can check the detailed schedule on the Sayville Ferry Service Website.
  • The Ferry ride to Cherry Grove, Fire Island costs $18 round trip for adults. You can see all the fares on the Sayville Ferry Service Website.

 

How to get to Fire Island by train?

If you are getting to Cherry Grove, Fire Island by public transportation, you will have to follow the steps below (example given from Penn Station):

STEP 1: Take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to the Sayville station – you can check schedules and costs on the MTA/LIRR website, and book your tickets on the MTA eTix app that you will need to download.

  • Option 1: If available, take the train towards Montauk or Patchogue.

  • Option 2: If the train towards Montauk (or the one towards Patchogue) is not available, take the train to Babylon, Long Beach, or Port Jefferson, and transfer at the Jamaica or Babylon station onto the train towards Montauk (or Patchogue)

STEP 2: Get off the train at the Sayville station.

STEP 3: At the Sayville train station, look for the Shuttle(s) to the Sayville Ferry. They are typically a few feet away from the station and will be offering rides to the Ferry.

STEP 4: The shuttle will drop you off at the Ferry that will take you to Cherry Grove, Fire Island.

STEP 5: Wait on line to get your Ferry tickets (it is recommended to get a round trip ticket) and hop on the Ferry. It will drop you off at Cherry Grove, your final destination.

Tips:

  • The train from Penn Station to Sayville takes about 1.5 hours.
  • The shuttle from the Sayville station to the Sayville ferry cost $5 – you will need to be prepared to pay cash.
